Needle play means sticking a needle through the skin of another person for fun, or to let someone do this to you and enjoying the sensation. It may sound very dramatic and creepy, but it doesn’t have to be.

The Basics

The basics of needle play is that you stick a medical needle through the skin of someone else. If you want to see more images of more creative (and sometimes more painful) needle play, then search for Needle play on Google Images.

Naturally you have to work clean and sterilized needles.

Do not use grandma’s needles that you sterilize (and blacken) by holding them over a lighter flame. Seriously: stupid shit like that happens by uninformed “Doms”.

Ideally only use medical needles, simply because they are the most safe: sharp enough, strong enough and packaged under sterile conditions. You can get them in different sizes.

Needle Play Is Creepy And Exciting!

Getting pinched by a needle through your skin is for most people creepy and exciting. My wife Karin explains this kick in two ways:

Horror movie and rollercoaster…. People love to be creeped out, and when the danger is no longer there, you feel stronger than before.

The fear of needles is very natural. We are biologically programmed to protect our body – our skin. That’s why it hurts when you injure your skin: it is a warning that something is really wrong.

Needle play in your normal skin (this excludes your genitals, nipples, lips or other extra sensitive spots) does not hurt that much. Think about the injection that you get at a doctor.

But, if you’re scared, then it will hurt more than usual.

That is a biological thing as well, even neurological. Fear makes you feel pain even more. And surpassing your fear makes you feel brave. Karin thinks it’s very scary to have a needle piercing her skin. But that fear, that is a kick in itself. And, as her intense love for rollercoasters show, clearly she likes the kick of fear. I could get her used to needle play, but I intentionally do not want that, because the fear is giving her a kick by itself.

Needle Play Is Also Relaxing

Needle play fits into a BDSM setting very well, in which a Dominant pinches the submissive and the sub suffers. In this scene there is a form of power relation.

But needle play can also be done without any power relation, solely because both parties enjoy it. Often you hear that it is very relaxing for the person doing the piercing, that it’s a concentrated and relaxing activity. Personally, I recognize that feeling, and often compare it to embroidering. You often see that people who pierce a lot, like to create aesthetically pleasing figures or patterns.

On the receiving end it can be very relaxing as well. Even if it is just about the sitting still or laying down which is a condition for needle play. (It is very dangerous to stick needles into a person who is moving about ;)) If you relax yourself completely and accept the pain of that needle prick, the same needle does not hurt as much.

All of this relaxing is very soothing. People sometimes compare it to meditation. Not that it’s the same, but like meditation, needle play has an element of complete relaxation and focus at the same time. To lie back and just let it all happen.

Safety

Needle play comes with risks. You’re damaging your body and even though the damage is being kept to a minimum, it is important to be aware of the risks. For example: Where you should and should not pierce. Which precautions you need to take. How you agree with a person in how far you can go beforehand. We think it is important that people are aware of the risks, thus making your more confident when you start playing. This will also make it more fun.
